Hyperlapse missions are used to generate imagery for Hyperlapse videos. These videos are a form of time-lapse, where the camera position moves slightly between shots. They are later processed and put together to form a short video. Given the limited flight time of any drone, only a few 10's of seconds of Hyperlapse video can be made from a single flight, and require many hundreds of frames of still images.

NOTE: This hyperlapse mission only collects the images. You will need other software to process these images into a hyperlapse video!

NOTE: If you have a Spark you cannot use this mission. The Spark does not support waypoint missions.

In Aero Ranger, the drone will fly extremely slowly (~0.1-0.5m/s) and a JPG image will be taken every 5s (every 10s for RAW). The drone will keep the camera pointed at a point of interest and will fly along a pre determined path.

Hyperlapse missions should be performed in still conditions as wind and turbulence will introduce movement into the video which may ruin the effect or require extensive post processing.

Two steps are required to produce a Hyperlapse mission:
  1. Setting the mission objectives
  2. Define the target and flight path for the Hyperlapse mission.
First, navigate to the Plan screen using the main menu as shown below. Tap the "Hamburger" icon at the top left of the screen to display this menu:


On the Plan screen, move the map close to the area that you would like to view and zoom in to a comfortable level. Don't zoom in too far. While you can zoom and scroll later, it is easier to move the map to roughly where you need it first.

When ready to create the mission, press the round blue + button at the bottom right of the screen to reveal the mission selector strip. Tap on the "Hyper" button on this strip to start building a Hyperlapse mission.


Step 1: Mission Objectives

The first step of any mission is the Mission Objectives dialog. This dialog allows you to choose basic settings for the mission and the items on it will adapt to suit the mission type. This will slide in from the right of the screen.

Note that you can exit mission creation by tapping the X at the top left of the objectives dialog. This will cancel new mission creation and retain whatever mission is currently loaded.


In the example above, there are several important settings that you can change, but in many cases the defaults will be suitable
  • Camera - The camera should show the drone that you are connected to now, or were last connected to.
    • Tap on this section of the dialog to display the camera settings.
    • In Hyperlapse missions JPG and RAW photos as well as video mode can be used.
Tip: You don't have to change Camera settings now, you can change them at any time prior to takeoff. Camera settings are available from the main app menu
  • Min Safe Alt - this is a critical setting for the entire mission.
    • Whatever other settings you choose, no part of the mission can be lower than this altitude.
    • It also defines the altitude at which the vertical part of takeoff finishes and the vertical part of landing begins
    • Make sure the Min Safe Alt is set well above any obstacles such as tall trees or buildings in your area of operations. The safety of the drone and people and property around you is your responsibility.
    • Remember - all altitudes are measured relative to the Home point.
  • Flying altitude (above home) - Use this option to simply enter the altitude that the Hyperlapse flight path will be at.
    • This must be above the Min Safe Alt (app will enforce this)
  • Target Speed - this is the speed in m/s that the aircraft will attempt to attain when flying along the Hyperlapse flight path
    • Unlike other missions, Hyperlapse missions speeds need to be very slow. Typically 0.2m/s. The app limits the upper speed to 2m/s
    • Also unlike other missions, the Hyperlapse mission has a faster inbound and outbound speed (4m/s from/to home). This allows you to reach the main part of the mission in a reasonable time.
    • As you move the speed slider, the distance between photos is indicated
    • 0.2 m/s=0.7km/hr=0.45 miles/hr
  • Camera Triggering - in addition to speed you can set how often the camera triggers (min 2s for JPG, 10s for RAW). The combination of this setting and the speed setting will determine how far apart the photos are, as indicated on the screen. Typically for Hyperlapse you want photos to be close together.
  • Review mission after creation - if you tick this on, the app will remain on the Planning page once you have finished creating the mission. If ticked off, it will automatically return to the Fly page, ready for takeoff.
When you are satisfied with the settings, press NEXT at the top right of the screen

Step 2: Target and Hyperlapse path


In this step, you will define
  • the camera target
  • the flight path.
The aircraft will fly along the flight path while keeping its camera pointed at the target at all times.

Target Point

A dialog will appear when you tap on the screen to set the target point. Enter the altitude of the target. It will default to 0 (the ground), but you can set it higher if you are targeting a tall building for example. Altitudes are relative to the takeoff point .

Tap OK. You can drag the target point marker to a new location at any time.


Flight Path

Tap the screen to place a waypoint. A green, numbered marker will appear. The tablet should vibrate when a waypoint is created. You can use up to 20 waypoints to define the path, but more waypoints mean longer missions. Typically 2 is plenty.

The order of the waypoints (as indicated by the numbers on them) is the order they will be flown in.

You can move waypoints by dragging them. To delete a waypoint, drag it near the black rubbish bin to the bottom left of the screen.

The estimated flight time is shown in white at the bottom of the screen. This includes a 2min allowance for the inbound/outbound leg of the mission. Ignore the other stats shown in the bar at the bottom for now, these refer to the previous mission

Only the section of the mission between these points will be flown at the slow speed specified in step 1.

The outbound (from home to point 1) and inbound (from the last point to home) parts of the mission will be flown at ~4m/s.

Tip: To zoom in/out and move or rotate the map, you can use regular pinch/zoom or single finger drag gestures on an area of the map away from the waypoint and point of interest icons. 

Tip: If you have zoomed in too far, finger gestures may not work correctly. In this case, use the  + or - buttons at the top right of the screen to zoom in/out one step.

Tap the blue OK button when you are finished.


Mission Statistics
After the mission is created, basic mission statistics are updated in the white strip beneath the map.

In the above case, the mission is 0.55km long, 157 pictures (estimated), 16:38 mins flight time (estimated), 5 seconds per photo

Final tips for Hyperlapse missions:
  • The slow speed you set will only be used for the main part of the mission. Inbound and outbound speeds are ~4m/s
  • The drone will point at the target point for the entire mission (including in and outbound sections)
  • You can fly a Hyperlapse mission with the camera set to JPG or RAW or Video.
  • You will have manual gimbal pitch control at some times during a Hyperlapse mission, but it's recommended that you don't modify the gimbal manually as it may affect the image alignment.
  • The drone does not take terrain into account in any mission. All altitudes are relative to the takeoff point. Please ensure you set the Min Safe Alt high enough to avoid crashing into terrain, buildings, people or infrastructure at any point of the mission. You are responsible for the safety of your equipment and people and property around you.

A critical part of any mission is the Home point.
